JUDAS PRIEST Betrayed Us: WHITEHORSE MOUNTAIN FESTIVAL Organizers
July 10, 2002JUDAS PRIEST used "blatantly false and disingenuous posturing" to cancel their appearance at Washington's 5th Annual Whitehorse Mountain Classic Rock Festival 2002, and in the process breached a "binding contract" that existed between the group and festival organizers Shadow Promotions, according to the latter's official statement explaining PRIEST's non-appearance at the event.
"Frank Wing from A.P.A. Entertainment out of Nashville, Tennessee, CALLED US and OFFERED US the August 18th performance date of JUDAS PRIEST, [and] we immediately agreed and formally responded with the offer and deposit," reads the statement. "They accepted, we wired the hard money retainer. This is considered by Washington State law to be a 'Binding Contract' and is understood, as such, by all parties. They mailed and we received all their promotional material for our print and Internet advertisements. We began our promotions.
"However, on June 10, 2002, Frank Wing called us and a three-day ordeal culminated in a flat out refusal to perform. We believe this was blatantly false and disingenuous posturing from JUDAS PRIEST. They said they could not get commercial plane flights, we found the flights. They asked for a private jet, we found that. They stated they had to bring their own musical equipment this was resolved. We informed them of the thousands of dollars we had already spent on 24 hour-seven day a week radio spots, newspaper ads, 20,000 fliers and posters advertising JUDAS PRIEST. It fell on deaf ears. Finally, in a three way conversation with Troy Blakely (the responsible agent for JUDAS PRIEST),Frank Wing and Shadow Promotions, Mr. Blakely rudely informed us that 'Absolutely NO way on this $#@!#$@ planet are they going to play your festival' and hung up.
"Anti-Americanism has been a problem long before the events of September 11th. Rude behavior, however, is NEVER acceptable. We have decided to hire an American Band. We proudly announce that GRAND FUNK RAILROAD will be headlining the 5th Annual Whitehorse Mountain Classic Rock Festival! We will leave it to you (our fans) to discern the motivation behind JUDAS' betrayal."
